Embark on a unique voyage of discovery aboard the Spirit of Oceanus, along the western edge of the famed Ring of Fire through the Kuril Islands and on to Japan. Spend 20 days of unparalleled exploration, cruising along the Kamchatka coast, through the Kuril Islands and into Japan’s northern islands of Hokkaido and Honshu. Enjoy dramatic scenery, and encounter the region’s unique wildlife, ancient cultures, and fascinating people whose lives are rarely touched by outsiders. The Kuril Islands are a chain of over 50 heavily-forested and volcanic islands. Once inhabited by the Ainu, who are thought to be descendants of migrating Mongolians, these islands are home to over 100 volcanoes, 35 of which are active. This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime voyage through some of the most unusual terrain on earth. Conclude the journey in Tokyo, where the ancient melds with the modern in a juxtaposition of unique contrasts. Travel with fewer than 120 guests aboard our luxury exploration ship. A fleet of inflatable excursion craft provides access to the most remote shores and offers an opportunity to observe wildlife up-close. Our superb Exploration Team includes a geologist, a historian well-versed in Russian-American history, and several naturalists who can help identify and discuss the abundance of plant and animal life we will encounter.
Russia's large volcanic belt, made up of 29 active craters,
stretches along its shore. Though the flora and fauna, as is
characteristic of northern regions, is not marked by diversity, more
than half of the world's Steller's Sea Eagles, as well as the largest
population of brown bears, are found here. On
Kamchatka you also find
the last stretches of
Siberian taiga. The waters around Kamchatka are
inhabited by the rare gray whale and approximately 300,000 seals, sea
lions, otters and other sea creatures. Kamchatka is also home to one
of the largest surviving wild salmon populations left in the world. In
the center of Kamchatka is Eurasia's only Geyser Valley. More than 150
thermal springs are scattered throughout the peninsula.
